Iran has officially appealed to the United Nations, urging an assertive response against the United States and Israel for military strikes on Iranian nuclear installations conducted in June. This request emerges as both Washington and Tehran display slight openness toward restarting dialogue.
In a correspondence directed at UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi insisted that the actions of both nations be classified as “acts of aggression” towards Iran, calling for accountability, including reparations for the inflicted damages.
Araghchi referenced former President Donald Trump’s admission on November 6 regarding his approval of Israel’s initial assault on Iran’s nuclear sites as a significant indicator of US complicity. He emphasized, “Donald Trump and US officials are criminally responsible for the June 13 incidents,” while urging the UN to intervene in line with international law.
According to Iranian reports, the June attacks have resulted in over 900 fatalities, including high-ranking military personnel. Tehran asserts that these incidents represent a direct military campaign led by the United States rather than mere support extended to Israel, demanding justice for the victims.
Despite the ongoing conflict, both nations have shown interest in potential diplomatic efforts. Trump indicated last month that the US is open to negotiations “once Tehran is ready,” extending a “hand of friendship and cooperation.” Meanwhile, Araghchi’s deputy reiterated Iran’s sustained interest in reaching a peaceful nuclear agreement with Washington.
Nonetheless, the situation remains tense, with Iran maintaining that the UN's intervention is necessary in response to this “unlawful act of war” instigated by the US and Israel. This case highlights the persistent volatility in the region, as diplomatic avenues are navigated with caution.
