On Thursday, Israel's military aid agency, COGAT, revealed that it is making arrangements with Egypt to reopen the Rafah border crossing for the movement of individuals. The specific date for this reopening is yet to be announced.
COGAT handles the entry of humanitarian aid and various goods into Gaza, emphasizing that humanitarian supplies will primarily continue to enter through the Kerem Shalom crossing with Israel and other designated points. It stated, “Humanitarian aid will not go through Rafah. This was never part of the agreement at any time,”.
The anticipated reopening comes amid Israel's warnings regarding the potential lockdown of the crossing while limiting aid into Gaza. The Israeli government raised concerns about the slow repatriation of deceased hostages by Hamas, reflecting ongoing tensions despite the ceasefire that concluded two years of conflict. This ceasefire enabled the release of all surviving hostages held by Hamas.
Reports surfaced on Wednesday suggesting that the Rafah crossing could facilitate the movement of individuals in and out of Gaza beginning Thursday, though an official announcement is still pending.
COGAT’s notice highlights the fragile balance between providing humanitarian support and addressing security issues in the area. While aid continues to be delivered through alternate crossings, the pivotal issue of facilitating movement at Rafah relies heavily on ongoing discussions between Israel and Egypt.
Rafah, which shares a border with Egypt, serves as a key exit point for Gazans, making its potential reopening crucial for families and civilians impacted by the ongoing strife.
The situation is continuously evolving, with authorities closely monitoring humanitarian requirements and security developments.
