In a significant development, Israel has reopened the Zikim Crossing in northern Gaza to enable the distribution of humanitarian aid, officials announced on Wednesday. This decision follows extensive advocacy from UN agencies and global organizations demanding access to areas in northern Gaza, notably Gaza City, where food shortages have been alarming.
Managed by COGAT—Israel's military organization responsible for coordinating aid—the crossing had been closed since September 12, blocking essential supplies from aid groups. Although some provisions reached the northern sector through southern avenues, experts cautioned that it was not sufficient to satisfy the escalating humanitarian demands.
According to a statement from COGAT, “The crossing has been opened following directives from our political leaders.” Aid is set to be delivered by UN and international bodies after passing rigorous security assessments by the Land Crossings Authority of the Ministry of Defence.
UN humanitarian representatives have persistently urged for the reopening of crossings in the north to guarantee timely supply of food, medical products, and other vital goods to those affected by the turmoil. Reports from global hunger monitors indicate rising risks of famine in northern Gaza, amplifying the need for urgent aid shipments.
The reactivation of Zikim Crossing is a crucial advancement in alleviating the humanitarian crisis, showcasing renewed collaboration between Israeli officials and global aid organizations. Humanitarian trucks are expected to commence deliveries immediately after standard security checks.
Despite the precarious situation, the restoration of aid access brings a glimmer of hope to countless residents struggling with basic supply shortages. While international agencies commend this step, they continue to demand consistent and unrestricted access to northern Gaza to meet ongoing humanitarian challenges.
