Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to postpone his previously scheduled visit to India, initially set for later this year. The trip, which was to include discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been delayed due to serious security issues stemming from a recent fatal explosion in New Delhi.
The explosion occurred two weeks ago and is considered the worst that New Delhi has seen in over ten years, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and numerous injuries. Security agencies in Israel and India have been vigilant in monitoring the evolving situation.
Reports indicate that Israeli officials recommend postponing the visit until a comprehensive security review has been conducted. Netanyahu aims to reschedule for next year based on the security climate at that time.
This is now the third occasion this year where Netanyahu has had to cancel or delay a trip to India. Previously, he had called off a one-day visit on September 9 due to elections in Israel and also withdrew from another proposed visit surrounding April’s elections for comparable reasons.
This planned trip was viewed as part of a larger initiative to emphasize Netanyahu’s strong connections with global leaders. In Israel, posters featuring his image alongside PM Modi, U.S. President, and Russia’s President were used to bolster his political stance. His campaign has leaned heavily into projecting an image of someone with considerable international clout, especially regarding national security.
Netanyahu’s last visit to India took place in January 2018, while PM Modi made a notable visit to Israel in 2017, marking the first time an Indian prime minister had done so. The rapport between the leaders is notable, frequently covered in the press of both nations.
For the time being, officials are awaiting a safer environment before finalizing new travel arrangements.
