Italian National Sentenced in Singapore's Rolex Fraud Incident

Italian National Sentenced in Singapore's Rolex Fraud Incident

Post by : Shakul

In a peculiar fraud case in Singapore, an Italian man has received a jail sentence after trying to deceive a watch dealer, only to realize that the luxury item he assumed was counterfeit was, in fact, authentic. The circumstances surrounding the case have sparked significant interest.

Deepak Singh, the one found guilty, was sentenced to serve seven months behind bars after acknowledging his attempt to commit fraud. The court maintained that his intention to mislead was sufficient to warrant a conviction, even though the plan did not succeed due to unforeseen developments.

The situation began in early 2025 when Singh acquired a rare Rolex GMT Saru for approximately €55,000, complemented by a Cartier bracelet. Initially believing he had made an excellent purchase, he intended to resell it for a profit.

However, doubts crept in after hearing from various sources about the limited availability of such watches. Singh’s uncertainty intensified when a watch shop pointed out potential alterations to the case, leading him to believe he had been duped.

Following this assumption, Singh traveled to Singapore in November 2025, seeking to sell the watch at a local establishment. He attempted to exchange it for three other Rolex models and even provided a forged passport for anonymity during the transaction.

Post-transaction, the shop owner grew suspicious about the authenticity of the watch and alerted law enforcement. Singh’s attempt to leave Singapore was thwarted when he was apprehended at Changi Airport.

The incident culminated when the watch was sent to an authorized Rolex service center, proving its authenticity beyond doubt. Despite the absence of financial damage, the court affirmed that Singh's intention to defraud justified his conviction, emphasizing the concept of impossible crimes within the legal framework.
