During the 117th IUCN Council meeting in Gland, chaired by Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, a global initiative to protect nature and conserve biodiversity was officially launched.
This meeting marks the implementation of pivotal decisions made at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025, scheduled in Abu Dhabi this coming October. At that congress, member organizations unanimously agreed on a unified strategy for the conservation of nature and re-elected Al Mubarak for a subsequent term as President.
As the world’s largest and oldest environmental network, IUCN comprises over 1,600 member organizations and more than 18,000 scientific experts collaborating globally to safeguard ecosystems, conserve species, and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources.
The congress in Abu Dhabi was a significant milestone for international conservation efforts. It launched the "Abu Dhabi Call to Action" along with a Strategic Vision for the next 20 years and a Programme of Work targeting the period from 2026 to 2029. These frameworks aim to accelerate achievements in global biodiversity commitments during this decade of urgency.
At the Gland gathering, the council concentrated on translating these commitments into actionable steps. Topics of discussion encompassed priority setting, identifying critical areas for impact, and enhancing monitoring systems related to biodiversity and species protection.
Additionally, the roles of various committees responsible for overseeing program implementation, financial accountability, and governance were reaffirmed, ensuring robust accountability as IUCN enhances its initiatives against escalating environmental challenges.
Al Mubarak underscored the acute need for immediate action, linking biodiversity loss with economic resilience, food security, and sustainable development. She called for improved coordination among science, policymaking, and practical application.
IUCN Director General Grethel Aguilar reiterated the necessity to transition from plans to tangible outcomes, leveraging IUCN's global network and extensive scientific expertise.
The council also evaluated methods to assist nations through enhanced access to data-driven tools, scientific insights, and guidelines. These initiatives are designed to promote effective biodiversity conservation and wildlife protection.
As global environmental challenges intensify, IUCN's comprehensive approach will be essential in providing scalable and impactful solutions. The organization is now poised to advance with a clear commitment to fostering measurable improvements in nature conservation and supporting sustainable practices.
