Japan's Tourism Stocks Plummet Following China's Travel Advisory

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Monday, Tokyo experienced a notable drop in tourism and retail share prices, driven by a warning from China urging its citizens to rethink travel plans to Japan. This alert coincides with rising tensions between Tokyo and Beijing regarding Taiwan.

Japanese department stores were particularly hard-hit in this downturn. The holding company of Mitsukoshi and Isetan saw a nearly 12% decline in shares, while Takashimaya and Uniqlo's parent company faced over a 5% drop. The cosmetics giant Shiseido also registered a significant decline. Airlines suffered as well, with Japan Airlines and ANA Holdings reporting losses, while the operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, Oriental Land, closed the day down 5.8%.

Traditionally, China has been a major source of tourists for Japan, making this warning a critical setback for the industry. Over the weekend, Chinese airlines such as China Southern, China Eastern, and Air China began issuing refunds for flights to Japan.

The advisory also applies to Chinese students studying in Japan, with the Education Ministry advising them to stay vigilant for safety concerns. Last year, Japan accommodated over 100,000 Chinese students, according to government statistics.

This escalation follows comments from Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who recently indicated that Tokyo might consider military action should Beijing act against Taiwan. Taiwan is situated just over 100 km from the nearest Japanese territory, increasing the area's strategic importance. Takaichi labeled such a situation a "survival-threatening scenario," a phrase articulated in Japan’s 2015 security legislation allowing the Self-Defense Forces to react to critical threats.

A recent Kyodo poll reveals a divided opinion among the Japanese populace regarding whether the country should enact self-defense measures if China attacks Taiwan. Diplomatic discussions between officials from both nations are anticipated soon, amid ongoing tensions.
