Jennifer Lopez, the singer and actor known for her dynamic performances, plays multiple roles in the new 2025 adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman. The film, directed by Bill Condon, is a musical that revisits the classic story while focusing more on queer romance than the 1985 movie version.
Lopez explained that taking on multiple characters was both a challenge and an opportunity. “You really do have to kind of let that go and make it your own,” she said. In the film, she portrays three characters: the Spider Woman, the Hollywood actress Aurora, and Ingrid Luna, a famous movie star. Each character has a distinct personality and singing style. She described the Spider Woman songs as darker and intense, Aurora’s songs as hopeful and romantic, and Ingrid Luna’s performances as strong and commanding, reflecting the superstar she plays.
From Novel to Broadway to Film
The story of Kiss of the Spider Woman began as a novel in 1976 by Argentine writer Manuel Puig. It was first adapted into a movie in 1985 by director Héctor Babenco, which was groundbreaking for its time in portraying LGBTQ+ themes. In 1993, the story was turned into a Broadway musical by Harold Prince, bringing the tale to the stage with music and theatrical spectacle. The 2025 adaptation draws from both the musical and the original story, aiming to explore the emotional depth and struggles of its characters more openly.
A Story of Love and Resistance
The plot follows Valentín Arregui, played by Diego Luna, a political prisoner, and Luis Molina, played by Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, a window dresser imprisoned for public indecency. While sharing a cell, Molina tells Valentín the story of a Hollywood musical featuring his favorite actress, Ingrid Luna. Over time, the two men form a close and unlikely romantic connection.
Director Bill Condon noted that this version of the film openly explores the queer romance between the two leads, unlike the 1985 movie which hinted at it more subtly. “Let me just say that film was groundbreaking for its time, and as a young gay man watching that movie, it meant a lot to me,” Condon said.
Empowering Latino and Queer Voices
For Tonatiuh, the role is a chance to honor both the art of storytelling and the real struggles of historically marginalized communities. “We were doing something that was bigger than us, but it was also bringing us joy,” he said. “It reminds us of the power that Latinos and queer individuals have, the dignity behind our communities, and the resilience behind that.”
The 2025 adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman is set to release in theaters on Friday, distributed by Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, and LD Entertainment. It represents a new chapter in a story that has resonated for decades, highlighting love, resilience, and the importance of representation in media.
