Sydney – John Laws, celebrated Australian talkback radio icon affectionately known as the "Golden Tonsils," has passed away at 90. With a career spanning over seven decades, he was among the highest-paid radio figures globally at his peak, cementing his place in the fabric of Australian media.
His family confirmed he peacefully departed at his Sydney residence on Sunday, describing him as a “cherished father, grandfather, and uncle.” Beyond his fame, he held a deep place in the hearts of his loved ones.
With his trademark greeting “Hello world,” Laws engaged with 17 Australian prime ministers and numerous celebrities, significantly influencing national political and public opinion. Former Prime Minister John Howard referred to him as “a dominant figure in Sydney and national radio,” while actor Russell Crowe fondly recalled him as a “mischievous mate” and an undeniable Aussie legend.
Born in Papua New Guinea in 1935, Laws moved to Australia during World War II and began his radio journey in regional Victoria at just 18, pioneering the talkback radio format as regulations permitted the airing of listener calls. His programs, hosted on prominent stations such as 2UE, 2GB, and 2SM, drew millions of listeners, especially from rural New South Wales.
Laws’ career was not without its controversies, featuring multiple violations of broadcasting rules and public backlash. Nonetheless, his unrivaled influence on the Australian radio landscape and politics was acknowledged, with former Prime Minister Paul Keating asserting, “If you could convince John Laws, you could convince Australia.”
Beyond radio, Laws explored television and film, appearing in the 1970 movie Ned Kelly with Mick Jagger. He was honored with numerous accolades, including his induction into the Australian Media Hall of Fame and receiving the Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to broadcasting and charity.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recognized Laws as an “iconic voice,” while New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced that his family would be offered a state funeral, highlighting his significant impact on Australian media and culture.
John Laws’ remarkable legacy as a groundbreaking broadcaster and influential figure will resonate with generations of Australians.
