John Rustad Resigns as B.C. Conservative Leader but Remains MLA

Post by : Meena Hassan

John Rustad, the leader of the B.C. Conservative Party, has announced his resignation from leadership but will continue to serve as an MLA. This decision came shortly after the party's board indicated that he had been removed from his position, a claim he initially contested.

On Thursday, Rustad remarked that conversations with his wife and close associates led him to this choice. He expressed concern that staying in the position could escalate tensions within the party, which he described as a 'civil war.' Although disappointed, he emphasized his ongoing commitment to the party and the province, urging members to reconcile differences for future progress.

While he will assist in the transition to new leadership, Rustad mentioned that he does not intend to seek re-election in the next provincial vote. He also expressed his family's anticipation of spending more time together.

The Conservative caucus announced on Wednesday their loss of confidence in his leadership, formally ousting him as the official opposition leader. This decision comes after months of party discord, during which multiple MLAs either resigned or were expelled, and calls for Rustad's resignation grew.

A letter endorsed by 20 out of 39 caucus members indicated their lack of confidence in him. The board of directors categorized Rustad as 'professionally incapacitated,' a classification outlined in the party's constitution for leader removal, which also includes resignation, death, or a leadership review with insufficient support. Rustad had previously scored nearly 71 percent in a leadership review.

The board announced that Trevor Halford will serve as interim leader following a caucus vote, despite Rustad's assertion that leadership should be determined by party management as per their rules.

Rustad stated that this scenario is a normal part of political dynamics and credited the belief that the B.C. Conservatives could assume government for expanding the party from one MLA to the official opposition with 39 MLAs. He became emotional while reflecting on a painted rock with the word 'believe,' presented to him during the 2024 campaign. He highlighted his efforts in advocating for policy reforms and remaining steadfast in achieving the party's objectives.

Rustad expressed pride in the advancements made and gratitude for having been a part of this journey.
