Kabul Enhances Trade Relations with India Amid Tensions with Pakistan

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a significant move to boost trade, Afghanistan is strengthening its ties with India, particularly as ongoing tensions with Pakistan hinder access to global markets. This initiative follows a visit by Afghanistan’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi, to New Delhi from November 19 for a five-day official engagement.

Diplomatic Engagement Signs Cooperation Growth

Minister Azizi received a warm welcome in India, with Anand Prakash, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighting India’s readiness to foster closer ties at a senior diplomatic level. This marks the most significant economic and diplomatic interaction between the two nations since 2021.

Emphasis on Trade and Economic Development

A key event during his trip was his participation in the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025 in New Delhi. Leading a sizable Afghan delegation, he sought to explore new economic opportunities and forge trade partnerships. Indian officials provided insights on investments, trade facilities, and how Afghanistan can enhance its presence in future exhibitions.

The Afghan delegation toured exhibits showcasing vital exports such as carpets, gemstones, handicrafts, and dried fruits. Meetings with Afghan business owners in India focused on addressing trade hurdles, market access, and strategies for boosting exports.

This visit is notable as it is the first attendance by an Afghan minister at the fair since 2021, signaling a warming of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The Context: Challenges with Pakistan

Afghanistan’s pivot towards India coincides with increasing trade restrictions and border closures with Pakistan, complicating the movement of Afghan goods into international markets. Frequent border shutdowns have caused significant losses for Afghan traders, urging Kabul to explore reliable trade alternatives.

An Indian official has confirmed ongoing efforts to enhance the India-Afghanistan air corridor, currently serviced by two daily cargo flights. Additionally, an Indian logistics firm is involved to boost freight capacity.

While Afghanistan had expressed hopes to restore shipping lanes via Iran’s Chabahar Port, current sanctions have complicated that pathway. Therefore, both nations are increasingly focusing on air transport solutions.

Rapid Development of Trade Relations

India is a crucial trading partner for Afghanistan, supplying rice, tea, sugar, textiles, medications, and machinery, while receiving agricultural products, gemstones, and minerals in return. Kabul is also pursuing Indian investments in mining and hydropower projects, which could significantly enhance its economy. The recent upgrade of India’s embassy in Kabul to fully operational status by October 2025 is viewed as a major advancement in rebuilding bilateral ties.

A Strategic Regional Shift

This transition sends a clear political message from Afghanistan: it is reducing dependency on Pakistan for international trade and is eager to deepen its economic relationship with India. As diplomatic engagement flourishes and the air corridor becomes operational, both nations are poised for a stronger collaborative trade future.
