Karachi Faces Gas Shortage: Residents Resort to Balloon Storage

Post by : Shakul

Karachi is currently grappling with a significant gas shortage, forcing residents to adopt unsafe and unconventional storage methods to fulfill their cooking needs. One alarming trend is the use of plastic balloons to store cooking gas during brief supply restorations.

In neighborhoods such as Orangi Town and Mominabad, individuals are utilizing specially designed balloons to capture gas whenever it becomes available. These balloons serve as temporary cooking fuel throughout the day, reflecting the dire circumstances many families face.

For many, this precarious method isn't optional; it has become a necessity. With inconsistent gas supply and low pressure during the majority of the day, meal preparation is becoming increasingly challenging.

These balloons, which are sold locally for between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500, are filled during supply windows and kept at home as a makeshift fuel reserve until the next availability.

However, safety experts are warning against this hazardous practice. The risks associated with storing gas in plastic balloons are severe, as even slight exposure to heat or friction could result in explosions.

Describing these gas-filled balloons as “mobile bombs,” analysts emphasize the heightened risks in densely populated regions where homes are in close proximity. The potential for catastrophic fire incidents is significantly elevated due to such unsafe practices.

This alarming situation has led to urgent calls for action from both government officials and gas suppliers. Many believe that enhancing supply stability and resolving infrastructure issues is essential to curtailing the prevalence of such dangerous methods.

The ongoing shortage also mirrors larger energy concerns linked to disruptions in global supply chains, where international tensions contribute to local fuel availability challenges.

As the crisis unfolds, residents are caught in a precarious balance between basic survival and alarming safety risks, underscoring the pressing need for reliable energy solutions and greater public safety measures to avert potential tragedies.
