King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) hosted the Times Higher Education (THE) World Academic Summit 2025, marking the first time the event was held in the Middle East. The three-day summit brought together 750 participants, including 105 keynote speakers representing 75 institutions from 28 countries. This gathering highlighted KAUST’s growing role in higher education and global collaboration.

The summit’s central theme, “Universities as Agents of Change,” focused on how higher education institutions can drive innovation, economic growth, sustainability, and cultural preservation. Discussions emphasized the responsibility of universities in shaping future generations and responding to global challenges, including climate change, urban development, and technological advancement.

Participants explored practical solutions for real-world problems, including building sustainable and resilient cities, advancing health and artificial intelligence research, and developing essential skills for students. The summit highlighted universities’ contributions to innovation and emphasized their role in fostering global collaboration and sustainable development.

KAUST President Sir Edward Byrne highlighted the significance of hosting the summit in Saudi Arabia, stating it affirms the country’s leadership in science and innovation. It also provides an opportunity for collaboration with global partners to strengthen the higher education sector.
