KAUST Leads Global Higher Education Summit in Saudi Arabia

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) hosted the Times Higher Education (THE) World Academic Summit 2025, marking the first time the event was held in the Middle East. The three-day summit brought together 750 participants, including 105 keynote speakers representing 75 institutions from 28 countries. This gathering highlighted KAUST’s growing role in higher education and global collaboration.

Theme: Universities as Agents of Change

The summit’s central theme, “Universities as Agents of Change,” focused on how higher education institutions can drive innovation, economic growth, sustainability, and cultural preservation. Discussions emphasized the responsibility of universities in shaping future generations and responding to global challenges, including climate change, urban development, and technological advancement.

Key Discussions on Innovation and Sustainability

Participants explored practical solutions for real-world problems, including building sustainable and resilient cities, advancing health and artificial intelligence research, and developing essential skills for students. The summit highlighted universities’ contributions to innovation and emphasized their role in fostering global collaboration and sustainable development.

Global Leaders and Influential Voices Participate

University presidents, industry leaders, policymakers, and academics attended the summit, exchanging ideas and sharing experiences. Speakers presented research-driven strategies to address pressing global issues and offered insights into preparing students to navigate an evolving world.

KAUST’s Role in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030

KAUST President Sir Edward Byrne highlighted the significance of hosting the summit in Saudi Arabia, stating it affirms the country’s leadership in science and innovation. The summit reinforces KAUST’s position as a model university designed to deliver impactful research and development. It also provides an opportunity for collaboration with global partners to strengthen the higher education sector.

Times Higher Education Highlights Summit Importance

Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, said the summit gathered influential voices to discuss challenges and opportunities for universities worldwide. Hosting the event at KAUST reflects the university’s mission to support Saudi Arabia’s priorities in research, innovation, and sustainable development, in line with Vision 2030.

Focus on Future Generations and Global Collaboration

The summit stressed the importance of universities in preparing future leaders and innovators while promoting sustainability and technological advancement. Collaboration among international institutions was a key focus, ensuring knowledge sharing and the development of strategies to address global issues effectively.
