England captain Heather Knight played a match-winning innings of 79 not out to guide her team to a four-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the Women’s Cricket World Cup on Tuesday. The game was held in Colombo, where Knight’s calm and composed innings helped England recover from a difficult start and secure their second consecutive win in the tournament. With this result, England now tops the points table after earlier defeating South Africa in their opening match.
Bangladesh’s Strong Bowling Start
Bangladesh’s bowlers made a strong impression early in the match, reducing England to 78-5. Spinner Fahima Khatun led the attack brilliantly, taking 3 wickets for just 16 runs in her 10 overs. Her performance, backed by disciplined bowling from the rest of the Bangladesh team, had England in deep trouble at one stage. Medium pacer Marufa Akter also struck twice in her spell, dismissing Tammy Beaumont for 13 and Amy Jones for just one run, putting England under immense pressure.
Knight’s Steady Recovery and Partnership
Heather Knight showed great leadership and patience as she steadied the innings. She first built a 40-run partnership with Nat Sciver-Brunt, who contributed 32 runs off 50 balls. However, the pressure increased again when Sciver-Brunt and Sophia Dunkley were dismissed in quick succession by Khatun. At 78-5, England’s hopes were fading until Knight found an able partner in Charlie Dean. Together, the pair added an unbeaten 79-run stand for the seventh wicket, which completely changed the course of the game.
Dean’s Supportive Role in Chase
Charlie Dean remained not out on 27, providing excellent support to her captain. Her calm approach helped Knight play her natural game. Both batters rotated the strike well and punished the loose deliveries. Their partnership frustrated the Bangladesh bowlers, who had no answers in the final phase of the innings. The duo’s partnership ensured England chased down the target with more than four overs to spare, sealing a confident victory.
Bangladesh’s Effort with the Bat
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh struggled against England’s spin attack after being put in to bat first. The team was bowled out for 178 runs in 48.3 overs. Shobana Mostary top-scored with 60 off 108 balls, including eight boundaries. She shared a 34-run partnership with opener Sharmin Akhtar, who made 30 from 52 balls. However, once they were dismissed, Bangladesh’s middle order collapsed under the pressure of England’s spinners.
England’s Bowling Dominance
England’s bowlers continued their strong form from their previous match. Linsey Smith led the spin attack with figures of 2-33, while Sophie Ecclestone was the star performer, taking 3 wickets for 24 runs in her 10 overs. Charlie Dean also contributed with two important wickets during the middle overs, breaking key partnerships. Despite late resistance from Rabeya Khan, who played a quick 43 not out off 27 balls with six fours and one six, Bangladesh couldn’t build enough momentum to reach a competitive total.
A key moment came in the 15th over of England’s chase when Heather Knight appeared to be caught at extra cover. However, replays showed the fielder, Shorna Akter, did not have full control of the ball. The third umpire ruled in Knight’s favor, and she continued her innings after nearly walking off the field. That decision proved crucial, as Knight went on to anchor the innings and lead England to victory.
After the match, Heather Knight praised Bangladesh’s performance and acknowledged the challenge her team faced. “These weren’t easy conditions to bat in, and they have a good bowling attack,” she said. “We made it a little difficult for ourselves, but we managed to build a partnership at the end, and that made all the difference.” Her words reflected her satisfaction with the team’s resilience under pressure.
England will now face co-host Sri Lanka in their next match in Colombo, aiming to maintain their top position on the table. Bangladesh, currently placed fourth, will take on New Zealand in their next fixture at the same venue. With both teams showing flashes of brilliance, their upcoming matches promise to be exciting encounters as the World Cup continues to unfold.
