Kuwait Records Scorching 51 °C Heat Amid Monsoon Shift

Kuwait is currently battling an intense and prolonged heatwave, with the highest temperature recorded this week reaching a scorching 51 degrees Celsius in Rabia. This makes it one of the hottest places in the country this summer. Other regions such as Jahra, Abdaly, and Kuwait International Airport also experienced extremely high temperatures, with readings touching 50 degrees Celsius.

Why Is It So Hot?

The country’s Meteorological Department has explained that this heatwave is primarily due to the influence of the Indian monsoon depression. This weather pattern has caused a very hot air mass to move over the Arabian Peninsula, accompanied by northwesterly winds. These winds are generally light to moderate, but they vary near coastal regions, where conditions are made worse by high humidity.

According to experts, such meteorological phenomena are not new, but their intensity and duration are increasing due to climate-related changes across the region.

Coastal Areas Hit Harder

While the heat is affecting inland and desert areas with extremely high temperatures, coastal areas are dealing with the added burden of elevated humidity levels. This makes the heat feel even more intense and can be especially uncomfortable during nighttime hours when temperatures remain high, often above 35°C, and the air stays heavy and sticky.

The Meteorological Department expects this humidity to begin reducing by Friday, giving some much-needed relief to those living near the sea.

Expected Conditions for the Week

The weather department has forecast that these extreme conditions will likely continue until Saturday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 50–52°C range in some regions. Even at night, the mercury may not drop significantly, making it difficult for residents to find comfort unless in air-conditioned spaces.

Additionally, dust and haze are expected in open areas due to northwesterly winds. These conditions can reduce visibility, making driving and outdoor work more challenging.

Impact on Daily Life

This ongoing heatwave is already having a noticeable impact on everyday life across Kuwait:

  • Outdoor workers such as laborers, delivery staff, and construction crews are at high risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
  • Residents are being advised to stay indoors during peak heat hours, especially from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and to keep hydrated at all times.
  • Elderly people, children, and those with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable and should avoid direct exposure to the sun.
  • Public parks and open spaces are reporting reduced footfall, as people avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary.
  • Hospitals and clinics have also been put on alert for cases related to heat stroke, sunburns, and dehydration.

Health Precautions Advised

Health authorities have shared a list of precautions for citizens and residents to stay safe during this period of extreme heat:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you're not thirsty.
  • Avoid caffeinated or sugary drinks, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  • Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothing.
  • Use hats or umbrellas when walking outside.
  • Stay in shaded or air-conditioned environments as much as possible.
  • If you must go outside, limit time in direct sunlight and avoid physical exertion.
  • Keep a close watch on vulnerable family members, including children, elderly, and pets.

What About the Weekend?

The Meteorological Department mentioned that the current extreme weather pattern is expected to ease slightly starting Sunday, as the Indian monsoon’s influence diminishes. However, this does not mean a full return to normal temperatures. Heat will remain, but it may come down to more manageable levels around 45–47°C by early next week.

Until then, people are encouraged to remain cautious and follow all safety guidelines issued by health and weather authorities.

Climate and Seasonal Changes

Meteorologists are also drawing attention to a long-term trend of rising summer temperatures in the Gulf region. In recent years, Kuwait has frequently ranked among the hottest countries in the world during summer months. This is part of a broader climate pattern that affects the entire Middle East, with increasing heatwaves, longer summers, and more frequent temperature spikes.

Experts are calling for more public awareness campaigns and urban planning solutions to combat these rising challenges, including:

  • Greener public spaces to reduce urban heat.
  • More shaded walkways and bus stops.
  • Updated working hour policies for outdoor workers during peak summer months.
  • Enhanced emergency medical readiness during summer.

Stay Prepared and Alert

As Kuwait deals with this blistering heatwave, Rabia’s record-breaking 51°C serves as a clear reminder of how extreme the climate in the region can become. While humidity along the coast is expected to fall by the weekend, very hot daytime conditions will persist across the country through Saturday.

All residents are urged to take precautions, limit outdoor exposure, stay hydrated, and watch for signs of heat-related illnesses. By following safety advice
