In a shocking event on Sunday, October 19, 2025, the renowned Louvre Museum in Paris fell victim to a brazen daylight robbery. Four individuals, camouflaged as construction personnel, infiltrated the Apollo Gallery by using a mechanical lift to access a first-floor window from the museum's southern side, successfully evading security cameras.
Once inside, the culprits shattered glass display cases utilizing power tools and made off with a stunning collection of jewels valued at approximately Rs 896 crore (around $102 million). The treasure included exquisite tiaras, necklaces, and earrings belonging to French royalty, such as Queen Marie-Amelie, Queen Hortense, Empress Marie-Louise, and Empress Eugenie. During their escape, one of the crowns was dropped, but authorities later found it, albeit damaged. The thieves swiftly escaped the scene using two scooters.
While the museum briefly closed its doors, it reopened three days later; however, the Apollo Room remains sealed as investigations proceed. More than 100 investigators are now on the case, and the stolen items have been entered into Interpol's Stolen Works of Art database to assist in their recovery.
In light of this incident, the Louvre has acknowledged security deficiencies, admitting that certain areas lacked adequate camera coverage during the robbery. After the event, museum director Laurence des Cars offered her resignation, which was declined by the Ministry of Culture.
Authorities are gathering evidence and have found DNA traces on a helmet and glove left behind by the thieves, alongside tools and a truck used in the crime. This audacious act has sparked global concerns about museum security and initiated a comprehensive manhunt for the perpetrators.
Considered one of the most daring heists in recent memory, this incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by even the world’s most prestigious cultural institutions.
