Iraq's PM Sudani Declares Major Election Victory

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Baghdad, Iraq: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has proclaimed victory in Iraq’s general election after preliminary results reveal his coalition, Reconstruction and Development, at the forefront. This announcement is a pivotal event in the country's political scene, positioning Sudani for a potential second term amid a high voter turnout and extensive public expectation.

Supporters celebrated in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square late Wednesday, waving flags, igniting fireworks, and reveling in music as election results were unveiled. The jubilant atmosphere highlighted the optimism among his base, viewing this win as a signaling of stability and progress.

In his televised address, Sudani congratulated the Iraqi populace, calling it a collective triumph. “This victory is not solely for our coalition, but for every Iraqi committed to rebuilding our nation,” he stated. On social media, he conveyed heartfelt thanks to citizens for backing him, reiterating that the coalition’s mission would be centered on “reconstruction and development.”

As per Iraq’s electoral commission, preliminary counts indicated that Sudani’s coalition secured over 1.3 million votes—approximately 217,000 more than the closest competing bloc. Over 12 million Iraqis participated in the voting process out of an eligible 21 million, even amid calls for a boycott from prominent Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Challenges Ahead

Despite Sudani’s initial victory being significant, the formation of a new government may be a drawn-out affair. Iraq’s political framework allocates power among its main communities: the prime minister is typically a Shiite Muslim, the parliamentary speaker a Sunni, and the president a Kurd. Expect lengthy negotiations among parties and coalitions, as forming alliances is key to achieving a parliamentary majority in the 329-seat assembly.

Sudani’s coalition is estimated to secure around 50 seats, establishing it as the most substantial single bloc, but insufficient for a majority. This sets the stage for extensive discussions to establish a government capable of tackling Iraq’s urgent issues—from corruption to unemployment and deteriorating infrastructure.

A Vision of Growth and Stability

Since taking office three years ago, Sudani has aimed to establish Iraq as a focal point for reconstruction and development. His term has brought tangible infrastructure enhancements throughout Baghdad, including new tunnels, bridges, and public initiatives focused on increasing connectivity and commerce.

He has also carefully maintained diplomatic relations with Iraq’s key international partners—the United States and Iran—amid escalating regional tensions. The prime minister has emphasized his dedication to protecting Iraq’s sovereignty and steering clear of foreign conflicts.

Despite these endeavors, many citizens remain doubtful that the elections will yield significant changes. Critics assert that entrenched political elites still steer power-sharing agreements, leaving minimal scope for genuine reform.

What Comes Next

As the final results are validated, lawmakers will initiate the formal procedure to nominate the next prime minister, a process that could extend over weeks or even months. While Sudani’s re-election seems probable, his capability to forge a stable and effective government will hinge on negotiations with other major factions and political parties.

As Iraq transitions into a new parliamentary term, citizens are keenly observing whether the commitments to development, transparency, and reform will materialize into real enhancements in daily living.
