A Public Citizen report says most corporate donors to former President Donald Trump’s $300 million proposal to build a White House ballroom have also been large recipients of federal contracts.
The group’s review found that 16 of the 24 identified donors were paid a combined $279 billion in U.S. government contracts over the past five years. Lockheed Martin alone accounted for roughly $191 billion during that period.
Other named contributors include Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Comcast and Union Pacific — companies that currently face or have interests in government reviews, mergers or regulatory matters.
Public Citizen Co‑President Robert Weissman criticised the payments, saying the donations appear aimed at gaining influence with the administration rather than acts of civic generosity.
Plans for the ballroom call for demolishing the White House’s East Wing, a move that has prompted questions about governance and potential conflicts of interest. Senate Democrats, led by Senator Adam Schiff, have demanded full disclosure of donors and warned of the risk of corruption.
President Trump defended the proposal as necessary for state events, saying the new 90,000‑square‑foot facility will replace outdoor tents and that private backers — his “friends” — are funding it instead of taxpayers.
The donor list also includes cryptocurrency firms such as Coinbase, Ripple and Tether, and high‑profile individual supporters like Steve Schwarzman and Miriam Adelson. Contributions are being channelled through the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service that is not required to disclose donor identities.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed critics, suggesting opponents would object even if taxpayers paid, while Mr Trump has rejected accusations of secrecy and said the project has been made public.
Preservation groups, ethicists and political opponents have criticised the initiative; it has even been satirised on Saturday Night Live, underscoring the project’s broad scrutiny.
Despite opposition, reports indicate planning and preparatory work are moving ahead, with a target completion date set for 2026.
