Malaysian Outcry Over Singaporean Drama's Scam Depiction

Post by : Shakul

A television drama from Singapore has encountered significant criticism in Malaysia due to its depiction of the nation as a hub for scam activities. This controversy has raised alarms among various groups worried about the potential impact on international perceptions.

The series, titled Highway to Somewhere, produced by Mediacorp, aired from March to April and features stories about road trips in Malaysia, including a narrative where travelers fall prey to a scam operation.

Numerous Malaysian Chinese associations have voiced their unease about the storyline, claiming it could misrepresent the nation to a global audience. They cautioned that such portrayals could damage Malaysia's standing and create adverse impressions for those unfamiliar with the area.

Critics pointed out that these depictions could reinforce harmful stereotypes and negatively influence vital sectors like tourism. They highlighted concerns that ongoing negative portrayals in the media might overshadow the country's rich culture and warm hospitality.

In light of the backlash, screenwriter Ang Eng Tee emphasized that there was no intention to harm Malaysia's image. He clarified that the storyline draws from real-life scam incidents, affirming that such crimes are a global issue, not confined to one country.

The producers further explained that the series showcases Malaysia's picturesque landscapes, including sites such as Ipoh, Kukup, and Port Dickson. They aimed to encourage tourism and highlight lesser-known locations in conjunction with the narrative.

Creators urged viewers to see the complete series before reaching conclusions, stating the plot ultimately illustrates law enforcement combating criminal activities while enhancing awareness of the rising threat of global scams.
