From November 18 to 20, military officials from the United States and China engaged in “frank and constructive” discussions regarding maritime security in Hawaii, with a focus on re-establishing military communication after escalating tensions. These talks, initiated under the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) framework, concentrated on safety and collaborative measures at sea and in the air.
During the discussions, representatives from both nations shared perspectives on the ongoing maritime and air security dynamics affecting relations. The dialogue also examined previous encounters involving naval and air forces from both countries to enhance professional interactions and mitigate risks of accidents.
The Chinese navy voiced objections to US freedom-of-navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, claiming these maneuvers violate China’s sovereignty. Conversely, the United States expressed worry regarding Chinese military activities near Taiwan and its increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea.
These working-level meetings followed a similar session in April, marking the first of its kind under President Donald Trump’s second term. These discussions are part of broader efforts to foster better communication, transparency, and safety in shared operational regions.
The Pentagon underscored the necessity of ongoing dialogue to enhance understanding of China’s military advancements and regional strategies, including nuclear capabilities. Both nations intend to continue these discussions, with a following meeting scheduled for 2026.
These talks signify a measured approach by the US and China to diminish misunderstandings at sea and in the air while aiming to ensure regional stability and avert military confrontations despite existing diplomatic and trade disagreements.
