MbS Returns to the Global Spotlight with US Engagement

MbS Returns to the Global Spotlight with US Engagement

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, commonly referred to as MbS, has landed in Washington for a significant meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. This visit marks MbS's first trip to the White House since the tragic killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. The engagement highlights the long-standing alliance between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, focused on energy, defense, and regional influence, despite previous controversies looming.

Seven years post-Khashoggi’s death, which caused widespread outrage, MbS has redefined his public persona from a marginalized figure to an adept political strategist. His current agenda involves mending ties with Iran, working toward a ceasefire in Gaza, and reintegrating Syria into Arab affairs. These diplomatic initiatives signify a notable shift from his earlier image as an impulsive leader, particularly given Saudi Arabia’s military actions in Yemen.

Within Saudi Arabia, the 40-year-old prince has implemented extensive social changes. Women now have the right to drive, work freely, and engage in public events, while international entertainment events featuring celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Camila Cabello have transformed societal norms. However, these positive changes coincide with a stringent consolidation of power: dissent is repressed, critics quieted, and rival factions minimized. The underlying message is straightforward—progress in Saudi Arabia is contingent on loyalty to MbS.

Experts point out that MbS’s U.S. visit carries a symbolic “pre-coronation” weight, indicative of his ascending influence in the kingdom. Despite his controversial history, the U.S. remains focused on strategic interests like energy security, defense partnerships, and advancements in artificial intelligence technology. A $600 billion investment pledge made during Trump’s May 2025 trip emphasizes the transactional nature of U.S.-Saudi ties.

MbS represents a generational evolution within the Saudi royal family. As the first monarch from King Abdulaziz's lineage, he deviates from the historically seniority-based succession. He has navigated key defense and economic roles while executing high-profile palace changes, seamlessly blending significant reforms with concentrated power control.

The crown prince's international aspirations span sports, technology, and energy sectors. Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia has integrated the LIV Golf circuit with the PGA Tour, lured soccer legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, obtained hosting rights for the 2029 Asian Winter Games, and is vying for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Domestically, his presence is omnipresent in media, shopping centers, and billboards, portraying each initiative as a pivotal stride toward modernization.

Despite ongoing scrutiny centered around opaque decision-making practices and human rights issues, MbS’s trip to Washington underscores Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in global geopolitics. The discussions with Trump are set to fortify defense agreements, facilitate technology transfers, and bolster Saudi Arabia’s standing in energy and artificial intelligence, cementing the strategic relationship between Riyadh and Washington.

As MbS occupies the spotlight, both supporters and opponents are observing intently, recognizing that the outcomes of this visit will influence not only Saudi Arabia’s course but also the geopolitical dynamics throughout the Middle East and beyond.
