A 67-year-old man from Michigan has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for issuing violent threats against President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. This high-profile case has garnered attention due to the suspect's name closely resembling that of Vice President Vance, alongside the severity of the threats aimed at prominent national figures.
James Donald "JD" Vance Jr. from Grand Rapids, known online as "Diaperjdv", made disturbing threats via the platform Bluesky earlier this year. Prosecutors highlighted that the content was both explicit and deliberate, posing a significant risk amid an already divided political landscape.
Judge Describes Conduct as “Grievous”
US Attorney Timothy VerHey reported that District Judge Paul L. Maloney characterized the threats as “grievous conduct”, necessitating imprisonment to deter similar actions by others online.
Vance's posts, dated March and April, ominously threatened the lives of national leaders should they visit his location.
On April 1, Vance wrote:
“Should Trump, Vance, or Musk ever come to my city again, they will leave in a body bag.”
He further claimed indifference regarding his fate, whether at the hands of the Secret Service or imprisonment, stating he “didn’t care either way”.
A post from March 7 targeted Trump’s eldest son, asserting:
“I will murder that stupid f-ker before he gets secret service protection.”
Pleading Guilty to Serious Charges
Vance admitted guilt to two federal charges:
Threatening to kill or harm the President and Vice President
Sending interstate threatening communications
Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Prosecutors emphasized that Vance’s threats were premeditated and targeted toward top government officials, not casual remarks made in anger.
US Attorney Remarks on Accountability
VerHey firmly stated that the internet should serve as a space for constructive dialogue and not threats. He noted, “When Vance threatened to kill our leaders simply due to political disagreement, he crossed an unmistakable line. Such actions warrant severe consequences.”
Increasing Threats Against Leaders
This incident reflects a troubling trend; only weeks earlier, another Michigan man was sentenced to 18 months for similarly threatening President Trump.
The surge in online threats has alarmed law enforcement, particularly as the nation approaches an anticipated election cycle.
Significance of the Case
The sentencing underscores a time of vigilant warnings from security agencies regarding political violence, radicalization, and domestic threats. The unique coincidence of Vance's name with that of the Vice President has drawn considerable attention, heightening concern about public safety.
Authorities assert that this sentencing sends a clear message: anonymity online does not equate to accountability when national security is at stake.
