Kolwezi, DRC – On November 17, a chartered Embraer ERJ-145 carrying Mines Minister Louis Watum Kabamba and around 20 delegates crash-landed at Kolwezi airport, sending dark smoke spiraling into the sky. Captivating footage shared on social media depicted the panic as passengers fled from the blazing rear section of the plane.
The incident, lasting just under three minutes, showed the aircraft approaching with deployed flaps. Sadly, it landed past the displaced threshold, collapsing the main landing gear. The aircraft then skidded off the runway, resting on its belly, while its tail caught fire. Thick black smoke billowed from the wreck, intensifying the chaos as passengers scrambled for safety.
The plane, registered D2-AJB and operated by Airjet from Angola, was en route from Kinshasa's N'Djili Airport with a stop in Lubumbashi. Reports from FlightGlobal indicated that due to construction at Kolwezi's runway 29, only 1,500 meters were available for landing, likely contributing to the mishap.
Congo's BPEA, the agency overseeing independent civil aviation inquiries, has launched an investigation. Fortunately, initial reports confirmed there were no fatalities and only material damage incurred.
In a statement, the Ministry of Mines reassured that the incident would not hinder the minister's objectives. “The minister has initiated technical discussions with the relevant authorities regarding support measures for the affected communities,” it read.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety at regional airports in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where infrastructural issues and construction can create dangerous conditions for aircraft.
Authorities and aviation specialists will analyze the video footage and aircraft data to pinpoint the cause of this accident. The prompt evacuation of all onboard has been widely commended as a crucial safety measure that prevented a possible tragedy.
This event underscores the critical importance of runway safety, spaced approach planning, and emergency readiness in avoiding aviation catastrophes.
