St. Charles County, Missouri – A Missouri judge has resigned after facing disciplinary repercussions for his unconventional conduct involving Elvis Presley. Matthew EP Thornhill, the longest-serving circuit judge in the county, stepped down amid backlash for wearing an Elvis wig and occasionally playing the artist's music during court sessions.
These occurrences took place over several years. Self-identified as a lifelong Elvis enthusiast, Thornhill revealed in a November 12 letter that he sometimes donned the Elvis wig around Halloween and played the singer's songs from his phone to alleviate stress among litigants and create a lighter atmosphere. Although he claimed his intentions were to reduce tension, the disciplinary commission concluded that his behavior compromised the "integrity and solemnity of the proceedings."
The commission's disciplinary report noted that Judge Thornhill occasionally made references to Elvis' life, touching on significant events such as his birth and death or quoting lyrics during official court proceedings. Images from the report depicted Thornhill seated at the bench, adorned with a black Elvis wig and sunglasses while even incorporating music during oaths.
Additionally, the report highlighted unrelated behavior, including promoting his political beliefs from the bench and questioning witnesses, lawyers, and litigants about his re-election campaign signs. The commission determined that Thornhill “failed to maintain order and decorum in the courtroom” and recommended a six-month suspension without pay, followed by an 18-month probation prior to retirement.
In his resignation letter, Thornhill acknowledged the allegations and described them as "substantially accurate." He accepted the commission's conditions, allowing him to retire after two decades of judicial service.
Thornhill's admiration for Elvis Presley is widely known; he has visited Graceland, the late singer's residence and burial place, 13 times and frequently expressed how Elvis has inspired him since childhood. However, the Missouri court system found his actions unsuitable for the formal environment of a courtroom.
