Chisinau, Moldova — Renewed divisions within Moldova’s Orthodox Christian community came to light on Wednesday as the primary church denied operating as a “Russian church.” This situation has sparked tensions between two competing Orthodox factions — one aligned with Moscow and the other with Bucharest.
With over 90% of Moldova’s population identifying as Orthodox Christian, the faithful find themselves divided between two main bodies: the Moldova Metropolis, under the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Metropolis of Bessarabia, connected to the Romanian Orthodox Church. Both entities lack full ecclesiastical independence, intensifying the intricate religious and political landscape in the country.
The conflict ignited when the Romanian-affiliated Metropolis of Bessarabia accused the Moscow-linked church of “mass deception” for allegedly misleading its adherents about its true affiliations. In defense, the Moldova Metropolis staunchly rejected accusations of being a surrogate for the Russian Orthodox Church, emphasizing its spiritual autonomy and commitment to maintaining national religious unity.
Experts note that this dispute mirrors larger geopolitical challenges, as Moldova navigates its historical and cultural connections with both Russia and Romania. The Orthodox Church has long been a foundation of Moldovan identity, now becoming central to a conversation about national sovereignty and spiritual loyalty.
Despite rising public scrutiny, both factions retain significant influence over many in Moldova. Analysts caution that without efforts for reconciliation, the divisions could grow deeper, risking further fragmentation of communities at a time when unity is vital for Moldova’s future.
