The remains of 15 Indian citizens, tragically lost in a recent boat incident in Vietnam, have arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday, aboard Vietnam Airlines flight VN979.
Upon landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, arrangements are being made to send the bodies back to their hometowns, facilitated by the respective state governments.
The remains are set to be sent to various locations across India, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Coimbatore, where families of the deceased await their return.
This tragic incident unfolded on July 11, near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, off the coast of Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, when a tourist speedboat capsized.
Onboard were 32 Indian tourists along with four Vietnamese crew members. The vessel, managed by Ocean Pearl Island Company, was making its way from Hon May Rut Islet to An Thoi Port when it overturned due to adverse weather conditions.
Rescue efforts commenced immediately as nearby tourist vessels rushed to the scene. Out of the 36 individuals aboard, 21 managed to survive, while unfortunately, 15 Indian tourists lost their lives.
Authorities have confirmed that out of the deceased, 10 hailed from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh, and two from Kerala.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi, along with the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, worked closely with local authorities to facilitate the identification and documentation of the deceased.

Support was also extended to survivors and families of those who tragically lost their lives within this accident.
On July 13, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed that the bodies had departed from Ho Chi Minh City on the same Vietnam Airlines flight VN979.
The embassy alerted the relevant state governments to ensure smooth transportation of the remains to their intended destinations.
Gratitude was expressed by both the Embassy and the Consulate General to the authorities in the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang Province, as well as Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for their help following this tragic event.
An update from the Indian mission revealed that the only critically injured Indian survivor has undergone successful medical procedures and has been transferred from Phu Quoc to a Ho Chi Minh City hospital for advanced care.
