Two oil tankers in the Black Sea, situated near Turkey, were hit by explosions, leading to rapid evacuation of all crew members and igniting fears of potential assaults on vessels transporting Russian oil. Turkish officials confirmed that the Gambian-flagged tanker Kairos caught fire around 6:00 pm local time, roughly 28 nautical miles from the shore of Kefken in northern Kocaeli province. Flames and thick smoke were prominently visible from the ship’s bow, yet no immediate reports of sea pollution have surfaced.
The Directorate General of Maritime Affairs indicated that the inferno aboard the Kairos, which was empty and en route to Novorossiysk in Russia, was due to external circumstances. All 25 crew members aboard have been safely evacuated, with Turkish rescue teams quickly deployed for assistance. Meanwhile, the second tanker, also flagged under Gambia, named Virat, reported an impact occurring approximately 35 nautical miles away, although officials have not specified the type of impact reported.
Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu suggested that these “external causes” may involve attacks originating from mines, rockets, drones, or unmanned underwater vehicles. Notably, both tankers were under Western sanctions aimed at preventing the transport of Russian oil, following the embargo initiated after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Rescue efforts also reached the Virat, confirming the safety of its 20 crew members. Officials reiterated the well-being of all sailors, stating that no oil spills or environmental threats have been detected thus far.
This incident underscores the ongoing hazards present in the Black Sea, where naval mines from both Russian and Ukrainian forces—employed to safeguard coastlines—have drifted during storms in recent years. In light of these risks, NATO members Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania formed a joint naval Mine Countermeasures Group in 2024 to monitor and address these threats.
The recent fire and explosion events exemplify the ongoing dangers posed to vessels within the region, particularly those involved in the transport of sanctioned oil, prompting maritime authorities to increase their monitoring efforts.
