The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has confirmed that the rise in mpox cases is still a public health emergency. This follows the fourth meeting of the Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations (IHR). The committee acknowledged that while some countries have improved their ability to handle the situation, the spread of mpox is still growing, especially in West Africa. There is also a possibility that the disease is being transmitted undetected in countries outside Africa.
The response to the outbreak is facing challenges like poor surveillance, diagnostic issues, and a lack of funding. These challenges make it difficult to prioritize actions needed to control the situation, which means international support is still crucial.
The mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its spread to neighboring countries was first declared a public health emergency by the WHO on August 14, 2024. Since then, the committee has met three more times, each time advising that it remains a global emergency.
