Amid the lively atmosphere of Tokyo, a unique bar called Muscle Girls is challenging traditional beauty standards and positioning strength as a facet of femininity. With its vibrant neon décor and striking hot-pink theme, this underground venue presents an engaging experience where female power takes center stage.
As upbeat tracks resonate throughout the bar, a group of women clad in sports bras and fitted shorts exhibit their impressive physiques, even smashing grapefruits bare-handed as patrons, mainly tourists, capture the moments on their smartphones.
“In Japan, the typical allure focuses on slender women with small frames,” commented Hitomi Harigae, manager of Muscle Girls. “Here, we cater to those seeking something extraordinary.”
Since its opening in mid-2020, Muscle Girls attracts about 100 guests each day, offering an unforgettable experience where muscular women engage in stage performances, pole dancing, and fitness displays. An entry fee of 6,000 yen (around $40) includes protein drinks and unlimited beverages, with options for personalized interactions, such as being lifted by or engaging playfully with the performers.
“Femininity also embodies strength,” shared Aubrey Lee, a visitor from Los Angeles. “It isn’t solely defined by delicacy or silence.”
Japan has a notable percentage of underweight adult women compared to other developed nations, with about 9% deemed below a healthy body mass index. Experts caution that linking thinness with beauty leads to malnutrition and related health issues. Muscle Girls defies this narrative, advocating that strength and health can also be synonymous with femininity.
For Harigae, 38, the bar is not just a source of entertainment but also a nurturing community that promotes confidence, self-worth, and friendship. She reminisced, “I will never forget the moment I accepted myself and felt my self-esteem soar.” In her downtime, she enjoys dining and pampering herself with colleagues, strengthening their camaraderie.
While female bodybuilding and fitness are gaining traction in Japan, conventional ideals still prevail in broader society. A recent Dentsu Soken survey revealed a decrease, from 43.7% to 38.2%, in respondents affirming that “men should express masculinity and women should embody femininity”— signaling a gradual cultural evolution.
Bodybuilder and Muscle Girls performer Yuka Moriya shared this view: “Women’s beauty isn’t just about being thin; I wish more would recognize the allure of muscle.”
With its audacious concept, Muscle Girls inspires both visitors and locals, demonstrating that femininity can indeed be confident, strong, and muscular—breaking conventions and celebrating empowerment.
