A legendary diamond brooch, originally lost by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte while fleeing from the Battle of Waterloo, fetched over 3.5 million Swiss francs (approximately $4.4 million) at a Geneva auction held by Sotheby’s on Wednesday. This price significantly surpassed the pre-sale estimate of 200,000 francs, showcasing the appeal of Napoleonic artifacts.
The stunning piece, which can also serve as a pendant, features an oval diamond exceeding 13 carats, encircled by smaller diamonds. Its hammer price stood at 2.85 million francs, with fees raising the overall total to 3.5 million francs.
Sotheby’s revealed that the brooch was found among Napoleon’s possessions in carriages that were delayed by muddy roads during his retreat from the Duke of Wellington and Prussian Field Marshal von Blücher. Over the last two centuries, the jewel remained with the Prussian Royal House of Hohenzollern. The buyer is a private collector, while the seller’s identity remains undisclosed.
Another highlight of the Geneva auction was a green beryl weighing over 132 carats, said to have been worn by Napoleon at his 1804 coronation, which sold for 838,000 francs—over 17 times its high-end pre-sale estimate.
Experts note that the auction's timing, occurring soon after the theft of Napoleonic jewels from the Louvre in Paris, heightened interest. “Given the recent heist and the provenance tied to such a prominent French figure, it’s no surprise the jewel achieved 3.5 million francs,” commented Tobias Kormind, managing director of online jeweler 77 Diamonds.
A separate “high jewelry” auction by Sotheby’s on the same day featured a striking 10-carat pink diamond named the “Glowing Rose,” which was withdrawn before the event following conversations with its consignor and was previously expected to sell for about $20 million.
This recent sale of Napoleon’s lost brooch has rekindled worldwide interest in the emperor’s jewels, intertwining remarkable artistry with a captivating history that continues to entice collectors and history buffs alike.
