NASA has opted to forego sending astronauts on Boeing’s upcoming Starliner mission, instead choosing a cargo-only flight. This decision follows the difficulties experienced during the first crewed return of the Starliner, which revealed multiple technical issues still under investigation.
This update comes in light of incidents earlier this year when astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore spent over nine months aboard the International Space Station. Initially launched via the Starliner capsule, they had to return to Earth without any crew on board due to problems with thrusters and other safety concerns. They successfully returned using an alternate spacecraft.
Since that event, NASA and Boeing engineers have focused on diagnosing the reasons behind the thruster malfunctions and additional system errors. Ongoing tests are in progress, with a strong emphasis on safety before future crewed flights.
The subsequent mission for Starliner will be a cargo flight aimed at the International Space Station, expected no sooner than April of next year. This mission is crucial to validate the spacecraft's operational safety without human occupants.
If the upcoming cargo flight is successful, NASA still aims to conduct three more crew flights before the space station's retirement in 2030, having narrowed its original plan from six to four due to delays and technical issues.
Despite these challenges, Boeing reaffirmed its dedication to the Starliner program, stating it is working closely with NASA to ensure the spacecraft aligns with all necessary safety standards for future human flights.
NASA officials have also confirmed ongoing tests on the propulsion systems and other key components. They are preparing for two potential Starliner missions next year, depending on the success of upcoming evaluations.
Nearly a decade ago, NASA enlisted Boeing and SpaceX to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station following the end of the Space Shuttle program. While SpaceX successfully completed its first crewed mission in 2020 and has consistently launched astronauts since, Boeing has encountered repeated delays and complications, heightening the need for Starliner to demonstrate reliability.
