NATO Responds to Drone Incidents Near Latvian Oil Storage

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In response to a significant border breach, Latvia’s military activated NATO fighter jets after two drones from Russian territory crashed near an oil storage site in the eastern city of Rezekne, adjacent to the Russian border.

According to officials in Latvia, the incident resulted in damage to four empty oil tanks at the facility, located approximately 40 kilometers from Russia. Authorities later recovered potential drone debris from the crash site.

Latvia’s Defence Minister, Andris Spruds, stated during an interview with LSM that the drones were probably launched by Ukrainian forces aimed at targets within Russia before entering Latvian airspace.

In the wake of this incident, NATO military aircraft from the Baltic Air Policing mission were dispatched to ensure the area’s security and oversee operations.

This drone crash occurs amidst escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, Russia issued threats indicating it might target foreign embassies in Kyiv if Ukrainian forces disrupt activities during Moscow’s Victory Day commemorations on May 8 and 9.

Earlier announcements from the Russian military hinted at plans for extensive attacks on Kyiv should Ukraine fail to observe a unilateral ceasefire proposed by Moscow during those events, including the annual military parade in Red Square.

In reaction to these threats, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked that Russia's ongoing assaults reveal an "obvious disregard" for peace proposals put forth by Kyiv.
