Tokyo, Japan – On 17 September 2025, the men’s javelin throw qualifying round was held at the World Athletics Championships. All eyes were on two great throwers: Neeraj Chopra from India and Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan. This competition is special because Neeraj is the reigning world champion and wants to defend his title, while Arshad is the Olympic gold medallist.
What Happened in Qualifiers
The qualifying round is split into two groups: Group A and Group B. Neeraj Chopra threw in Group A, while Arshad Nadeem was in Group B.
The automatic qualifying mark was set at 84.50 metres. Any athlete who throws at least this distance goes directly to the final. If fewer than 12 athletes cross that mark, the rest of the places are filled by the best throws among all competitors.
Neeraj Chopra’s Performance
Neeraj Chopra needed only one attempt to qualify for the final. He threw 84.85 metres on his very first attempt, which is better than the automatic qualifying mark.
Because he secured a spot early, he did not take further attempts in the qualifier.
Two other athletes in Group A also crossed the mark of 84.50: Julian Weber of Germany and Dawid Wegner of Poland.
Arshad Nadeem and Others in Group B
Arshad Nadeem had a slower start. In his first attempt, he managed 76.99 metres—much less than what was expected of him given his past performances.
Other top athletes in Group B, like Anderson Peters and Julius Yego, were also competing. For some of them, qualifying looked more promising.
What This Means
With his throw of 84.85m, Neeraj Chopra has shown strong form. He is in the final and ready to compete for gold.
Arshad Nadeem must improve in his following attempts or hope his throw is among the best of Group B to make it to the final.
A showdown between Neeraj and Arshad is expected in the final round, which is to be held on 18 September 2025.
Context & Importance
In 2023, Neeraj Chopra won the World Championships gold. He is aiming now to defend that title, a rare feat in men’s javelin throw.
In the Paris 2024 Olympics, Arshad Nadeem had beaten Neeraj Chopra and won gold. This adds a layer of rivalry: Neeraj wants to bounce back and show that he can reclaim top place at World Championships.
There are also more Indian athletes in the competition: Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, and Yash Vir Singh join Neeraj. Having many competitors from India increases hopes and attention from fans.
What to Watch Next
Arshad Nadeem’s best efforts in his remaining attempts – Will he break through to reach the final?
Neeraj’s consistency and strength in the final – can he produce a throw that wins gold?
Other challengers, like Anderson Peters or Julian Weber, who might upset predictions.
Historical feat: If Neeraj wins again, he becomes only the third man in history to defend the world javelin title.
