Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to alarming levels of settler violence in the West Bank by convening a cabinet meeting with key security personnel, including military leaders and police officials. The meeting focused on recent violent acts against Palestinians and strategies to address them.
Notably, violence in Huwara has escalated, where settlers allegedly targeted Palestinian vehicles with stones. This incident coincided with a significant fire at a scrapyard, resulting in plumes of smoke visible in the sky. Local eyewitnesses indicated that settlers were involved, and Israeli military forces intervened to prevent further chaos. The police are currently investigating the origins of the fire.
The U.N. humanitarian office revealed there were 29 settler attacks recorded in the West Bank from November 11 to November 17, resulting in 11 injuries and significant property damage, affecting homes, mosques, vehicles, agriculture, and an estimated 1,000 trees. Furthermore, Palestinian officials reported that two young individuals, aged 16 and 18, lost their lives due to Israeli gunfire, although details remain murky.
This uptick in violence correlates with the Palestinian olive harvest, a period known for increasing tensions. Netanyahu characterized the attackers as “a handful of extremists” and urged law enforcement to take decisive action. However, many rights organizations and Palestinian representatives contend that settler violence has become a routine issue, a far cry from sporadic incidents.
Huwara has previously faced assaults, including a major incident earlier this year when settlers destroyed property after the deaths of two of their own at the hands of a Palestinian assailant.
U.N. statistics indicate that nearly 2,920 settler attacks took place in the West Bank from January to October 2025. The current Israeli administration, which includes far-right members advocating for settlement expansion, has sanctioned new settlement initiatives and the appropriation of historical lands.
In response to the rising unrest, the international community is taking action. Singapore has imposed financial sanctions and travel restrictions on four Israeli settlers accused of violence against Palestinians, pressing Israel to ensure accountability and curb settler aggression.
The Israeli security cabinet plans to reconvene to outline additional measures, including potential educational interventions aimed at violent settlers, as the situation in the region continues to deteriorate.
