A tragic explosion near Delhi's Red Fort has left nine dead and over 20 injured. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is spearheading the investigation, honing in on three doctors from Al-Falah University in Faridabad.
The detained doctors—Muzammil Shakeel, Umar Mohammed, and Shaheen Shahid—were linked to the university and its hospital. Muzammil and Umar are from Kashmir, while Shaheen is a Lucknow native.
Muzammil’s name came to light during an investigation into a large explosives cache discovered in Faridabad, where about 2,900 kg of bomb-making materials were seized from rented rooms. A vehicle associated with Shaheen was also found containing assault rifles and ammunition, suggesting deeper ties to extremist activities. Shaheen is alleged to be involved in establishing the India chapter of the Jaish-e-Mohammed women’s wing, Jamaat ul-Mominaat, led by Sadia Azhar, the sister of the group's founder, Masood Azhar.
Officials are investigating whether Umar Mohammed was behind the wheel of the Hyundai i20 that detonated near a congested intersection in Delhi. The circumstances surrounding the blast are being examined as authorities consider the possibility of it being a retaliatory suicide mission linked to the arrests and explosive discoveries.
Delhi Police have taken steps to gather more information, including reviewing security footage from Al-Falah University and interviewing its staff and students to build the case further. The incident raises alarms about the potential for terror networks to operate under the facade of educational institutions.
The NIA's involvement highlights the serious nature of this incident and the possible connections to larger organized terror elements. Ongoing investigations aim to clarify the links between the confiscated explosives, the university's staff, and the tragic Red Fort explosion.
