Max Verstappen of Red Bull clinched victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Saturday, with attention drawn to McLaren's Lando Norris, who bolstered his championship lead. Norris finished in second place, extending his advantage over teammate Oscar Piastri to 30 points.
The thrilling race unfolded under the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip, featuring a fast-paced and challenging street circuit. Norris started as the championship leader, needing a strong finish to maintain his title aspirations. With two races and one sprint left in the season, he now has 408 points, while Piastri trails behind with 378. Verstappen remains in contention with 366 points.
Piastri came in fourth but faced challenges after Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli incurred a five-second penalty for an early jump at the start. George Russell celebrated his 150th race by finishing third for Mercedes.
Verstappen enjoyed an exceptional race, overtaking Norris at the start as the McLaren driver overshot the first corner, which allowed both Verstappen and Russell to surge ahead. He built a commanding lead and ultimately won by more than 20 seconds.
This victory marks Verstappen's 69th career win, his sixth this season, and his eighth consecutive podium finish. Additionally, it came during Red Bull's 150th race with Honda.
"It was quite a decent gap in the end," Verstappen remarked, expressing satisfaction with the car's performance.
Even though Norris didn't win, his second-place finish keeps him well-positioned for his first Formula One championship. He humorously noted that he “let Max have the win,” admitting he braked too late initially, resulting in the loss of the early lead.
Despite the early mishap, Norris swiftly retook second place from Russell on lap 34 and managed his fuel adeptly throughout the remainder of the race.
With McLaren having already earned the Constructors’ Championship for the second consecutive year, Norris has the opportunity to secure the Drivers’ Championship in the upcoming race in Qatar.
This race witnessed several engaging moments:
Oscar Piastri fell from fifth to seventh due to contact with Liam Lawson but managed to recover for a fourth-place finish.
Lance Stroll and Gabriel Borteleto had a collision on the first corner, leading to both their retirements.
The Virtual Safety Car was deployed twice due to debris on the circuit.
Alex Albon and Lewis Hamilton collided, with Albon receiving a penalty, while Hamilton fought back from the back of the grid to earn points.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished sixth, with Carlos Sainz taking seventh for Williams. Isack Hadjar secured eighth for Racing Bulls, followed by Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton rounding out the top ten.
With only three sessions left this season, the championship race heats up. All eyes now focus on Qatar, where Norris may finally achieve his long-awaited world title.
