Investigations are underway into another Pride flag theft in Norwich, Ontario, where suspects reportedly cut down a flagpole and stole the flag from an elementary school. This incident marks the sixth attack on Pride symbols in the community within a year, raising alarms among local leaders and educational officials.
The Oxford Ontario Provincial Police received reports of the theft at Emily Stowe Public School, with officers responding to the scene on Saturday night at approximately 10:30 p.m. Witnesses claimed two individuals arrived, dismantled the metal flagpole, took the rainbow flag, and fled towards Stover Street.
The suspects were described as white males in their late teens or early 20s. One was noted for wearing a light shirt and having a slender build, and the other wore a black T-shirt accompanied by a light hat and blue pants.
This incident follows a recent event at the same school, where a Pride flag was reportedly removed and set on fire. There have been other cases of Pride flags being stolen across Norwich, including from private residences and other schools in the vicinity since the previous year.
Norwich's Mayor Jim Palmer condemned the theft, labeling it as "cowardly." He emphasized the need for a public response to foster respect and tolerance among residents, despite the township's limited influence over police investigations.
Marcus Ryan, Warden of Oxford County, added his voice to the condemnation of the vandalism, highlighting the distress such acts cause to families and students. He expressed concern about whether parents now fear for their children's safety at school.
Ryan pointed out that inadequate support for community inclusion initiatives might be contributing to the discord in the township, referencing Norwich Township's choice not to partake in Oxford County's Safe and Well Oxford Plan that focuses on creating a sense of belonging across the area.
Meanwhile, the Thames Valley District School Board has assured families that efforts are underway to quickly replace both the stolen Pride flag and the damaged flagpole. The board reiterated that discrimination and hatred do not belong in the school environment.
These ongoing incidents have alarmed community members and advocates, who stress that Pride flags symbolize support and acceptance for the LGBTQ community. Local leaders are calling for mutual respect and understanding while urging anyone with information regarding the theft to come forward.
The police encourage anyone who may have details about the incident to reach out to the Oxford OPP or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
As investigations continue, local officials and school representatives are determined to maintain a respectful and safe environment for all students and residents. The flag and flagpole's replacements will be expedited, and efforts to identify the culprits remain ongoing.
