Iain Rankin has stepped into the role of interim leader for the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, pressing the provincial government for heightened focus on the economy. He is advocating for more collaboration, public engagement, and a defined economic framework.
Taking over from Derek Mombourquette this week, Rankin steps in during the party's selection of a permanent leader, following a dismal election that left them with only two seats.
Rankin emphasized the necessity for “a fresh set of objectives for a contemporary economy,” addressing issues like U.S. tariffs and stagnant population growth that are impacting revenue streams. The deficit for Nova Scotia is projected to exceed $1 billion, with further updates on the fiscal situation expected next week.
He criticized the government's heavy reliance on natural resources such as petroleum, wind energy, and essential minerals, while neglecting faster-growing sectors like tourism and marine resources.
“It's somewhat disingenuous to state that economic development is a priority when the government has only recently begun to respond to U.S. circumstances,” Rankin stated.
He advocates for a more inclusive approach, calling for input from other political entities and community stakeholders, akin to the Ivany Report's decade-long economic blueprint. Rankin insists that economic targets should be clear and publicly monitored.
In response, Premier Tim Houston urged the Liberals to work with his administration to enhance Nova Scotia's economy, stressing the significance of natural resources and support for local enterprises.
Rankin further highlighted the necessity for improved government spending oversight, as the Progressive Conservatives have reportedly overspent by approximately $1 billion each year, partly due to previous population growth. With a slowdown in growth, he suggests that all programs and departmental expenditures need a thorough efficiency review.
Meanwhile, Mombourquette remains committed to supporting the party and has not disclosed his intentions regarding the permanent leadership. Rankin has confirmed he does not seek the permanent position.
