New York City's Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani has confirmed he will be moving into Gracie Mansion, the historic residence in Manhattan that has been home to many city mayors since World War II. This decision wraps up months of speculation surrounding whether he would vacate his rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria, Queens, which became a significant talking point during his campaign.
“This choice came down to our family's safety and the necessity of dedicating my focus to realizing the affordability agenda that New Yorkers endorsed,” Mamdani stated.
Mamdani’s home in Astoria, situated in a lively area renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and foods, has been his sanctuary for years. “To my beloved Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the essence of New York City,” he expressed. “Though I may no longer reside in Astoria, its spirit will always accompany me and shape my efforts.”
During his campaign, Mamdani emphasized his stance on rent freezes, connecting it directly to his housing situation. Some critics, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged why Mamdani, from a notable family—his mother is filmmaker Mira Nair and his father Mahmood Mamdani is a professor at Columbia University—continued to live in a rent-stabilized apartment.
Not every mayor opts to reside in Gracie Mansion; Michael Bloomberg, for instance, preferred his Upper East Side townhouse throughout his three terms, using the mansion mainly for public events and overseeing its renovations to maintain its historical significance.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion boasts butter-yellow siding, green shutters, and white railings, with interiors that highlight its Federal-era design. The five-bedroom estate overlooks the East River and includes enhanced security measures to safeguard the mayor and family.
The mansion is also known for its peculiar occurrences; Chirlane McCray, wife of former Mayor Bill de Blasio, once recalled doors opening mysteriously and unsettling floor creaks. Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams affirmed, “There are ghosts in there, man.”
Mamdani’s rent-stabilized Astoria apartment cost around $2,300 per month, which is notably lower than the NYC average for a one-bedroom at $3,500. His move to Gracie Mansion symbolizes a transition from a modest life in Queens to the historic grandeur and responsibilities of the city’s official mayoral residence.
