Old Doha Port Leads Earth Day Drive with Marine Cleanup & Protection

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Old Doha Port is marking Earth Day by showcasing its ongoing environmental efforts focused on marine protection, waste management, and seabed conservation. These initiatives reflect its commitment to protecting the marine environment that supports its operations and aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and sustainable tourism goals.

One of its key programs is the annual Seabed Cleaning Initiative, launched in 2023 and now in its fourth consecutive year. The program brings together professional divers, technical teams, government bodies, and private partners to clean the seabed at depths of up to six meters. The teams remove plastics, abandoned fishing nets, ropes, and other large marine debris that can harm marine life and affect safe navigation.

Before each operation, detailed surveys are conducted to identify polluted areas. All collected waste is carefully sorted, and recyclable materials are processed in coordination with specialized recycling partners. The initiative also helps raise public awareness about marine conservation and encourages community participation in protecting coastal waters.

Old Doha Port also maintains strong marine pollution response systems. It is equipped with specialized tools, including floating barriers used to contain oil spills on the water surface, along with recovery and treatment equipment. Trained response teams are always ready for emergencies, and regular drills are conducted in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure full preparedness.

In addition, the port operates a strict waste management system for all marine activities. This includes designated waste collection points for solid waste, sewage treatment facilities, and storage tanks for used oils. Any discharge of waste into the marina water is strictly prohibited. Continuous monitoring is carried out to ensure compliance with environmental rules.

Through these combined efforts, Old Doha Port continues to strengthen its role in protecting marine ecosystems while supporting sustainable development in Qatar.
