Omaha Woman Born Without Brain Celebrates 20th Milestone

Omaha Woman Born Without Brain Celebrates 20th Milestone

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Alex Simpson, a 20-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, has achieved the remarkable milestone of her 20th birthday, despite being born with hydranencephaly, a rare and severe neurological condition. Doctors had initially cautioned her parents that she might not survive beyond the age of four.

Born missing most of her brain’s hemispheres and reliant on cerebrospinal fluid, Alex’s survival is a surprising case in the medical community. Her father, Shawn Simpson, detailed, “Technically, she has roughly the size of my pinky finger for her cerebellum in the back part of her brain, but that’s all there is.”

Although Alex is unable to see or hear, her family believes she can still perceive their feelings. Her 14-year-old brother, SJ, noted, “She can sense when someone’s in pain or under stress. It’s remarkable how she engages with the world around her.”

Shawn and Lorena Simpson, her parents, attribute their unwavering love and faith as the core reasons behind Alex’s exceptional journey. “Twenty years ago, we felt fear, but our faith propelled us forward,” Shawn shared. Alex celebrated her 20th birthday on November 4 surrounded by family and friends, reaching a milestone once deemed unattainable by her doctors.

Hydranencephaly affects about 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 10,000 pregnancies and results from severe damage to the developing brain in utero, often due to stroke, infection, or trauma. While infants with this condition may initially seem healthy, they can eventually experience significant delays in development, seizures, and sensory deficits. No cure exists, but supportive care may extend life in rare instances.

Alex’s story serves as a touching reminder of love, resilience, and hope. Her family describes her as a “fighter,” proving that medical forecasts are not always definitive.
