Oman Participates in Global Archives Congress in Barcelona

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Sultanate of Oman took part in the meeting of the Executive Bureau of the International Council on Archives (ICA), which was held on the sidelines of the ICA Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The congress ran from 27 to 31 October and is one of the most important global gatherings in the field of archives and records management. The event brought together experts, specialists, and representatives from archival institutions across the world.

The International Council on Archives Congress is widely recognized as a premier platform for discussing global archiving policies, best practices, and future strategies. It serves as a meeting point for professionals and policymakers who shape the direction of archives and records management worldwide. This year’s sessions in Barcelona provided a valuable opportunity for sharing experiences, building networks, and setting new goals for the development of archival systems in an increasingly digital era.

The sessions of the Executive Bureau addressed a range of key topics related to the future of archiving. These included developing long-term strategies for the ICA, strengthening its role in supporting archives around the world, and improving mechanisms for cooperation among member institutions. Discussions also focused on promoting knowledge exchange and enhancing the quality of recordkeeping systems. Such initiatives aim to preserve archives as essential sources of human memory, heritage, and historical understanding.

Representing Oman at this international event was the National Records and Archives Authority, which continues to play a leading role in advancing archival work both regionally and internationally. The Authority’s participation reflects Oman’s strong commitment to developing professional archiving practices and aligning them with international standards. This involvement is also consistent with the objectives of “Oman Vision 2040,” which emphasizes innovation, digital transformation, and global cooperation.

Oman’s participation at the ICA meeting highlighted its ongoing efforts to modernize the national archival system. The country is investing in digital preservation tools, electronic record management systems, and innovative technologies to ensure the protection and accessibility of its historical documents. Through these initiatives, Oman seeks to position itself as a leading center in the field of document and archive management in the Arab region.

During the congress, the Omani delegation attended several specialized meetings, including the session of the Arab Branch of the International Council on Archives and the General Assembly of the Council. These sessions provided opportunities to discuss regional cooperation, strengthen professional ties, and share best practices among Arab and international archival institutions. The discussions also covered the role of new technologies—such as artificial intelligence—in improving digital record management.

The congress emphasized the importance of collaboration between archival institutions at both the regional and global levels. Delegates explored ways to enhance professional training, exchange experiences, and build partnerships that promote innovation in archiving practices. Oman’s delegation contributed to these conversations by sharing insights from its own national programs, particularly in the area of electronic document preservation.

The International Council on Archives Congress served as a major global platform for over two thousand experts and practitioners working in both traditional and digital archiving. The event provided valuable opportunities for dialogue and partnership-building with global technology developers and knowledge management organizations. Participants discussed how modern tools like artificial intelligence and big data analysis can improve digital preservation and enhance access to archival resources.

By joining the Barcelona congress, Oman demonstrated its growing international role in the archival field. The participation of the National Records and Archives Authority reflects the country’s commitment to international collaboration and to promoting the use of technology for sustainable knowledge preservation. It also underlines Oman’s determination to contribute to global discussions on how archives can better serve societies in the digital age.

Oman’s active role in the International Council on Archives meeting in Barcelona highlights its continuous pursuit of excellence in the field of records and documentation. Through partnerships, digital innovation, and participation in global forums, Oman is ensuring that its archival systems remain both modern and accessible. This effort supports the nation’s broader goal of preserving cultural heritage while embracing new technologies that enhance the understanding and sharing of human history.
