In a groundbreaking achievement, a specialized medical team at Al Nahdha Hospital's Ophthalmology Department has successfully carried out the inaugural DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) cornea transplant in Oman. This advanced procedure marks a significant advancement in eye care, utilizing one of the most precise corneal transplant methods available globally to address disorders that affect the inner layer of the cornea, such as Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy and corneal edema following cataract surgery.
Dr. Haitham bin Hilal Al Mahrouqi, a Senior Specialist in Cornea Transplants, Cataracts, and Vision Correction at the hospital, noted that the surgery lasted around one and a half hours. Unlike conventional full cornea transplants, DMEK focuses solely on replacing the impaired inner corneal layer using donor tissue, thus preserving the other structures of the cornea. The transplant tissue is impressively thin, less than 15 microns, facilitating an accurate cell replacement and enabling quicker vision recovery.
Conducted under local anesthesia, the procedure involves the removal of the damaged endothelial membrane and inserting the donor tissue through a small incision measuring no more than three millimeters. An air or gas bubble serves to hold the tissue in place, and patients are required to remain flat for a period post-surgery to ensure that the transplanted tissue adheres correctly.
Dr. Haitham pointed out several benefits of this operation. Patients can anticipate swift and clear vision improvements, diminished risks of immune rejection given the small size of the transplanted tissue, and the absence of surgical sutures. The cornea retains its natural contour, which aids in preventing fluctuations in vision quality. However, he emphasized the necessity for high-level skill due to the tissue's delicate nature. In some instances, if the transplanted membrane becomes detached, a straightforward air bubble reinjection may be required. This procedure is not advisable for individuals with significant corneal scarring or opacities.
DMEK transplants boast a remarkable success rate of over 90-95 percent, allowing most patients to resume daily activities within weeks. Dr. Haitham stated that the availability of this surgery at Al Nahdha Hospital enhances the spectrum of advanced services within the ophthalmology sector in Oman, showcasing the hospital’s dedication to offering specialized and contemporary surgical solutions.
Since the initiation of its cornea transplant program in September 2023, Al Nahdha Hospital has, in collaboration with the National Organ Transplant Program, conducted upwards of 180 cornea transplant procedures. This success highlights the hospital's increased proficiency in addressing various corneal conditions and achieving highly favorable patient results.
With the successful execution of this DMEK surgery, Al Nahdha Hospital has solidified its role as a premier medical facility in Oman, providing state-of-the-art treatments while assisting patients in safely and effectively recovering their sight. This operation symbolizes a significant leap forward in enhancing eye care services within the region.
