Oman Joins GCC Ministers Meeting To Boost Social Development

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Sultanate of Oman, through its Ministry of Social Development, took part in the 11th meeting of the Committee of GCC Ministers of Social Affairs and Development. The event was hosted in Kuwait and brought together leaders from all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The Omani delegation was led by Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Oman’s Minister of Social Development. The meeting focused on important issues that affect the social fabric and welfare of Gulf societies.

Importance Of The GCC Meeting

The GCC Ministers of Social Affairs and Development meet regularly to coordinate policies and strategies across the Gulf region. Their discussions usually focus on social welfare, community well-being, family development, and humanitarian efforts. This 11th meeting was particularly important because it introduced new strategies and long-term plans for 2025 and beyond. Oman’s participation showed the country’s commitment to being an active partner in strengthening regional cooperation.

Adopting The GCC Drug Control Strategy

One of the major topics discussed during the meeting was the adoption of the GCC Drug Control Strategy for 2025–2028. Drug misuse is a serious issue that can harm individuals, families, and communities. The new strategy will provide a common framework for all Gulf states to fight drug abuse. This includes prevention campaigns, rehabilitation programs, awareness initiatives, and joint enforcement efforts. By uniting under one strategy, GCC countries can better protect their citizens from the dangers of drugs.

Reviewing Long-Term Social Action Plans

The ministers also reviewed the action plan for 2026–2030. This plan outlines how GCC countries will work together on social issues in the coming years. The agenda included cooperation in social care, community development, and improving standards of living across the Gulf. It was an opportunity for countries like Oman to share their experiences and learn from each other. The plan will help ensure that social development continues to adapt to new challenges.

Joint Humanitarian And Charitable Work

Another highlight of the meeting was the discussion on the joint charitable and humanitarian action plan for 2025–2030. GCC countries have a long tradition of humanitarian work, not just in their own societies but also in supporting people around the world. By creating a joint framework, Gulf states can combine their efforts and resources more effectively. This plan focuses on providing faster and more efficient aid during crises, supporting vulnerable groups, and ensuring that charitable work is sustainable and impactful.

Focus On Persons With Disabilities

The ministers also reviewed the benefits and services provided to persons with disabilities in GCC countries. The discussion focused on how to improve support systems, provide better access to education and healthcare, and ensure inclusion in the workforce. Oman and other countries are working to create more opportunities for people with disabilities so they can live with dignity and contribute fully to society. This review helps identify gaps and ensures that policies are constantly improved.

Quality Of Life Index In GCC

The meeting also included an overview of the quality of life index. This index measures how comfortable and satisfied people feel in their daily lives, based on factors like health, safety, education, work-life balance, and social services. By tracking this index, GCC countries can see where progress has been made and where more effort is needed. Improving the quality of life remains a top priority for Gulf leaders, as it directly impacts the happiness and stability of their people.

Promoting Digital Inclusion For The Elderly

A very important topic discussed was digital inclusion for the elderly. As technology continues to advance, many older people struggle to keep up with new tools and services. The ministers highlighted the need for programs that help the elderly use digital platforms confidently. This includes training them to use smartphones, online government services, and digital healthcare systems. Promoting digital inclusion ensures that no one is left behind in today’s fast-changing digital world.

Oman’s Role In The Gulf Family Forum

Alongside the ministerial meeting, Oman also participated in the Gulf Family Forum. The forum was organized under the theme of strengthening family stability in the face of modern challenges. It brought together experts and representatives from different Gulf states to exchange experiences and ideas. Oman’s participation reflected its strong interest in supporting families, protecting youth, and empowering women in society.

Protecting Children And Youth Online

One of the forum’s main goals was to address the digital challenges facing children and youth. With the internet and social media playing such a big role in young people’s lives, there are growing risks such as cyberbullying, online exploitation, and harmful content. The forum discussed best practices for protecting young generations from these dangers. Countries shared their awareness campaigns, laws, and safety measures to ensure that digital platforms remain safe and educational.

Empowering Women In Family And Society

The forum also highlighted the role of women in building families and society. Empowering women has become a central focus for GCC countries, including Oman. Women are now playing stronger roles in leadership, education, and the workforce. At the forum, participants discussed how to continue supporting women’s empowerment while ensuring they remain central in maintaining family values and traditions. Oman presented its own achievements in women’s empowerment as an example of progress.

Preserving Gulf Identity And Values

Another key focus of the forum was the preservation of Gulf identity. In today’s world of globalization, societies face challenges in protecting their cultural values and traditions. The forum encouraged cooperation among Gulf countries to strengthen a sense of belonging, loyalty, and cultural pride. The idea is that strong family values and cultural identity are essential for social stability, even in times of rapid change.

Importance Of Family Stability

Family stability was at the heart of the Gulf Family Forum. Leaders emphasized that strong families create strong societies. They discussed new policies and programs to support families in adapting to modern lifestyles, balancing traditions with contemporary needs, and preparing youth for the future. Oman’s contributions highlighted its own family care programs, which include initiatives for child protection, social welfare, and women’s empowerment.

Oman’s Active Role In Social Development

Through its active participation in both the ministerial meeting and the family forum, Oman showed its strong role in shaping the future of social development in the Gulf region. The country is committed to supporting joint strategies, sharing best practices, and promoting inclusive policies that protect all members of society. Oman’s efforts also underline its belief that social stability is the foundation of sustainable growth.

The 11th meeting of GCC Ministers of Social Affairs and Development marked another step forward in regional cooperation. By adopting joint strategies and action plans, the Gulf countries are preparing for the challenges of the future. From drug control and disability rights to family stability and digital inclusion, these discussions show that the GCC is focused on both protecting its people and building a better quality of life. Oman’s involvement proves its dedication to this shared vision for the region’s future.
