Oman has taken a big step toward protecting the environment and growing its economy at the same time. A new project in the Sohar Governorate is turning copper mining waste into valuable materials using clean, renewable energy.
The project was officially launched under the patronage of H.E. Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. The event was attended by senior government officials and leaders from the private sector.
This new facility, led by Green Technology Mining and Services Company, is the first of its kind in Oman and the region. It uses advanced, eco-friendly technology to recycle copper waste in a sustainable way.
The project cost over OMR 41 million and is a partnership between BPG Group and Oman Mining Company, with strong support from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion.
Operations will start this June, producing 60 tonnes of "green copper cathode" in the first year. Green copper cathode is internationally recognised as a clean and recycled metal. By December 2026, the plant is expected to increase its output to 12,000 tonnes per year.
Eng. Khalid bin Salim Al Qassabi, Director General of Industry, said the ministry helped build strong rules and systems to make sure the project follows the highest technical and environmental standards.
Ernest Griesemann, CEO of BPG Group, said this project is the result of long-term planning and cooperation that began in 2018. He also shared that it shows their deep commitment to clean energy and responsible mining.
This new recycling plant supports Oman Vision 2040, which focuses on making better use of local resources, increasing local industries, and positioning Oman as a leader in green and sustainable industries.
