The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, is joining nations worldwide in celebrating the International Day of Rural Women. Observed annually on October 15, this day highlights the important role women play in rural communities. The celebration recognizes their contributions in agriculture, development, and other essential sectors.
Theme Highlights Women’s Role in Food Production
This year’s celebration is held under the theme, “Rural Women Cultivate Good Food for All.” The theme focuses on the crucial role women play in producing healthy and sustainable food. It also emphasizes their efforts in supporting local development and ensuring the well-being of communities across Oman.
Rural Women Support Oman’s Economy
The Ministry stressed that rural women are a key pillar of Oman’s national economy. They actively participate in several vital sectors, including agriculture, animal husbandry, and handicraft industries. In addition to these roles, women manage households and small projects in different governorates, making significant contributions to local livelihoods and economic growth.
Number of Women in Agriculture and Industry
According to the Ministry, the total number of Omani women engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, and industrial and food processing operations has reached 10,148. This number highlights the growing involvement of women in sectors that are critical to Oman’s food security and rural development.
Diverse Roles Across Rural Communities
Statistics indicate that 89% of rural women are involved in animal breeding and production, while 68.2% contribute to agricultural and livestock activities. Around 37% of women participate in handicraft industries. These figures demonstrate the wide range of areas where rural women are active, reflecting their versatility and importance in supporting both traditional and modern sectors.
Contribution to Food Security and Local Development
Through their work in agriculture, livestock, and food processing, rural women play a key role in producing food for communities. Their participation not only strengthens local food systems but also supports sustainable development goals. By managing small projects and contributing to handicrafts, women also help preserve cultural traditions while boosting local economies.
Government Recognition of Women’s Efforts
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources continues to recognize the value of rural women’s contributions. By providing support and opportunities, the government ensures that women can expand their roles in economic activities and development projects. Such recognition is essential for empowering rural women and improving overall community welfare.
Promoting Equality and Opportunities
Celebrating rural women also emphasizes the need for equal opportunities in agriculture, livestock, and handicrafts. Encouraging women to participate in these sectors contributes to social and economic development, while also inspiring future generations to engage in rural development initiatives.
