Russian Attacks Leave Over One Million in Dnipropetrovsk Without Heating or Water

Post by : Meena Hassan

Following heavy Russian strikes on essential energy infrastructure, more than a million individuals in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region have found themselves without heating and water supplies, a report from a Ukrainian official stated on Thursday. These assaults occur amidst plunging temperatures, raising serious concerns for the affected civilian population.

This winter, Russian forces have escalated their attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities, continuing a strategy from previous winters aimed at crippling heating and water services. Both Kyiv and its allies have denounced these strikes as part of a deliberate strategy to weaken the resolve of the civilian population by imposing severe living conditions during the cold season.

In addition to the chaos in Dnipropetrovsk, the surrounding Zaporizhzhia region faced extensive power losses following a coordinated drone assault by Russian forces. Ukrenergo, the national grid operator, reported that many residents were left without power and heating after the attack late Wednesday.

Minister for Restoration Oleksiy Kuleba confirmed that efforts to restore heating and water supply to the affected individuals in Dnipropetrovsk are underway, highlighting the urgent need to support over one million subscribers suffering from the outages.

The Ukrainian Air Force revealed that Russia launched a barrage of 97 drones, with Ukraine successfully intercepting 70. Nevertheless, 27 drones managed to hit various points, inflicting considerable damage to critical infrastructure.

Amid this challenging situation, Vladyslav Gaivanenko, the military leader of Dnipropetrovsk, indicated that the scenario is “difficult” but reassured residents that energy workers would commence restoration efforts as soon as conditions permitted. Meanwhile, in Zaporizhzhia, essential facilities have partially regained electricity, but many residents remain in the dark, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov.

In retaliation for the ongoing assault on its energy infrastructure, Kyiv has conducted strikes targeting Russian oil depots and refineries. These counteroffensives aim to disrupt Russia’s energy exports and create shortages that could hinder Russian military operations.

These relentless attacks on energy infrastructure deepen the humanitarian crisis during a harsh winter and illustrate the escalating intensity of the conflict, profoundly affecting civilian life across Ukraine.
