Saudi Crown Prince's US Visit Sparks Outrage Among 9/11 Survivors

Saudi Crown Prince's US Visit Sparks Outrage Among 9/11 Survivors

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Washington, Nov 19, 2025 — The visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House has stirred intense emotions and scrutiny from 9/11 survivors, who expressed outrage even as he pledged that Saudi Arabia is committed to preventing future tragedies.

During a joint press conference with former President Donald Trump, Prince Salman touched on the September 11 attacks and the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. He remarked, “It’s painful to hear about anyone losing their life for no real purpose. It was a grave error, and we are doing everything to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” citing Saudi Arabia's determination to enhance global security.

The Crown Prince conveyed that Osama bin Laden misused Saudi nationals to undermine US-Saudi relations. “Believing this narrative aids Bin Laden’s mission,” he said, stressing the importance of solid diplomatic relations between Riyadh and Washington to combat extremism.

Despite his assurances, many 9/11 survivors voiced their discontent and disbelief regarding the prince's presence at the Oval Office. They argue that accountability for both the attacks and Khashoggi’s killing has yet to be achieved. A US intelligence assessment released in 2021 indicated Prince Salman had ordered Khashoggi’s assassination, a claim he adamantly denies.

Advocacy groups for survivors highlighted that while vital diplomatic ties between the US and Saudi Arabia exist, justice and transparency remain necessary for healing. One spokesperson from the 9/11 Victims’ Families Association remarked, “The visit starkly reminds us how the victims’ families are still seeking accountability.”

Trump defended Prince Salman against inquiries regarding Khashoggi’s murder, asserting, “He had no knowledge of it.” This defense has attracted criticism, particularly amid ongoing discussions around human rights and US foreign policy.

The crown prince’s visit is synchronized with endeavors to bolster civilian nuclear cooperation and defense agreements, including the potential sale of F-35 jets. Nevertheless, the memories of past calamities, such as 9/11 and the Khashoggi incident, loom large, highlighting the complex interplay between political realities and the demand for moral accountability in US-Saudi relations.

Experts suggest the visit reflects the intricate balancing act needed between diplomacy and historical grievances. While Saudi Arabia seeks to forge stronger strategic alliances and reassure partners, victims and human rights defenders persist in calling for acknowledgment, apology, and vital reform.

This visit underscores persistent challenges in US-Saudi relations, especially in matters of transparency, accountability, and international trust. Furthermore, it illustrates the enduring effects of 9/11 and notable incidents like Khashoggi’s murder on diplomacy and global perspectives regarding Saudi leadership.

As the crown prince engages further in Washington, global audiences observe closely, evaluating his promises of reform against the calls for justice from victims and worldwide observers.
