Pakistan has rejected recent remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting the country has been carrying out covert nuclear detonations, saying it will not be the first to restart nuclear testing in South Asia.
A senior Pakistani security official said Islamabad continues to observe a unilateral moratorium on explosive tests and stressed the country's commitment to a cautious nuclear posture, noting that Pakistan is not a signatory to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty but has no intention of resuming tests.
In a broadcast interview, Trump claimed several nations—including Russia, China, North Korea and Pakistan—were persisting with secret tests while the United States has stayed away from testing for decades. He argued the US should consider testing because, in his view, others "test" clandestinely.
Pakistan last carried out nuclear tests in 1998 and maintains that moratorium. The foreign ministry restated its support for the objectives of the CTBT and reiterated that Pakistan will not be the first to resume nuclear detonations in the region.
China also dismissed the accusations, reaffirming its adherence to a self-defensive nuclear strategy and urging respect for global non-proliferation norms and international commitments.
To date, North Korea remains the only country to have conducted nuclear detonations since the 1990s. Both Russia and China have denied undertaking secret explosive tests, and US military agencies report no evidence of recent nuclear detonations by those states.
The remarks come as Trump advocates reviving US nuclear tests to match other powers, a stance that has stoked worries about regional stability and arms dynamics. Pakistan's clear rebuttal highlights its stated focus on restraint and avoiding escalation in South Asia.
