Early Friday, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake rattled various parts of Pakistan. The tremor, recorded at a depth of 135 kilometers, sparked brief alarm among locals, although there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant structural damage.
This earthquake originated in a seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. The region—which encompasses parts of Afghanistan, northern India, and Pakistan—is known for frequent seismic events resulting from the interaction of these gigantic plates. Given Pakistan's geographical location, it remains vulnerable to potentially powerful tremors.
Earthquakes that occur closer to the surface can be particularly hazardous; these shallow events lead to more intense shaking and may cause greater destruction. However, this tremor's depth of 135 kilometers classifies it as relatively deep, thereby minimizing its immediate threat.
Several provinces in Pakistan, such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, are especially vulnerable to seismic incidents. Balochistan, which lies near the active boundary of the Arabian and Eurasian plates, is particularly at risk. Even less exposed regions, like Sindh and Punjab, are not entirely safe due to their geological positions.
Officials are actively monitoring the aftermath of the quake, urging residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols during seismic events. Given the historical frequency of moderate to strong earthquakes in the region, experts underline the critical need for preparedness in Pakistan.
